The Huawei P40 Pro is the best camera phone you can buy for less than $ 1,000 / £ 900, it's that simple. In fact, for a certain type of photographer – one who appreciates a telephoto lens – it's just the best camera phone at the moment.
Recommend it comes with its own set of warnings given the Huawei / Google situation although. This is why, despite its long list of stellar features, you should definitely read our P40 Pro review before taking one. Regardless of its software limitations, its camera will bring you down.
The Leica brand imaging system of the P40 Pro is driven by a brand new 50MP sensor, which uses the formation of RYYB sub-pixels (red yellow yellow blue), like the 40MP P30 Pro before that. Huawei claims that this makes their cameras more capable of handling dark scenes like a champion, and we can attest to the fact that the P40 Pro absolutely can.
The main camera lens is a fairly standard f / 1.9 aperture on paper, but with a huge sensor size (for a smartphone) and OIS, combined with Huawei's powerful electronic image stabilization, c is still a low light star. This phone can pretty much see in the dark, even in automatic mode – something that no other non-Huawei phone can do.
There's also an ultra-wide 40MP f / 1.8 camera, a 12MP telephoto lens that is capable of 5x optical zoom or 50x digital zoom, and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor to create bokeh effects.
The photos taken on the P40 Pro are very detailed and not very noisy. Unlike Samsung, Huawei's photos don't look too sharp, and although they're not as natural and neutral as those taken on the Oppo Find X2 Pro, many will prefer Huawei's relatively punchy style.
When it comes to zoom, although the P40 Pro isn't nearly as close as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the phone costs a lot less and, more importantly, offers more consistent picture quality on its cameras.
The rest of the phone’s hardware is top notch, it looks like a treat and has a lot of power, so if (and only if) you are comfortable with the software experience without Google, the P40 Pro is full to love.

The iPhone 11 Pro not only offers the best smartphone camera from Apple, it is also the best cell phone camera you can buy for a certain type of user. It's reliable – you take a picture and it will probably look good, even in average light. The dynamic range is strong and with three cameras, it is also versatile.
The main camera has a focal length of 26mm, perfect for capturing daily shots. The ultra-wide camera takes a step back so you don't have to, getting more in the frame with its focal length of 13mm. As for the telephoto lens, as with the iPhone XS, it zooms in on your subject with a 52mm focal length – perfect for portraits.
Although there is no manual mode and the 12MP resolution is poor on paper compared to some competitors, the results are still impressive and Apple has introduced a new night mode which can keep the shutter open for incredible photography in low light.
This can't beat the astrophotography function on pixels when they're stable on a surface or tripod, but pocket-sized, it's up there with the best of them.
Add a perfectly consistent color and tone profile to the mix across the three cameras, and if you're an Apple fan looking for a camera champion, that's as good as it gets.

The Pixel 4 is probably the most mixed bag on our list; on the one hand, it is a fantastic camera with capabilities that DSLR users can only dream of, made possible by long exposure astrophotography mode of almost 5 minutes. On the flip side, however, it's an expensive flagship with poor battery life and no ultra-large cameras.
If you plan to buy one, we invite you to opt for the Pixel 4 XL if you hope to spend a whole day because this larger Pixel 4 lasts a little longer.
Both phones have the same great dual camera, and it's a plugger. Although its main sensor is only 12.2 megapixels, similar to the iPhone 11 Pro, it captures beautifully balanced images almost every time.
Pixel 4s also introduce convenient exposure control when shooting, so you can accentuate shadows separately until the overall brightness, ensuring vivid details even in the darkest places and keeping a tapered appearance in the highlights.
When the light goes down, place the phone on a stable surface, point it at the sky and it will activate its acclaimed astrophotography mode, capturing the night sky, stars and even galaxies on a clear night.
Despite this victory, a notable omission on the new Pixels is an ultra-wide camera, so if you know you will want to capture GoPro-style ultra-wide photos, you may want to look at any other phone with our best camera phone list.

There is a lot going on with the camera configuration of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. For starters, you have over 200 megapixels on the front and rear cameras, then there are these new smart shooting modes you can talk about; and finally – there is this huge zoom – 100x “Space Zoom”. Marketing jargon? Absolutely, but independently, the S20 Ultra's camera is a telephoto champion.
It all starts with a 108MP primary camera sensor – the same as that of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10. This time, it is combined with a 48MP optical zoom camera, an ultra-wide 12MP camera and a time-of-flight sensor around the back, which brings together depth information for the blurred background, still images, and leading Live Focus videos.
The Ultra's zoom is truly the best in its class compared to other camera phones on the market. It uses approximately 5x optical zoom with a high resolution sensor to create almost lossless 10x zoom images. Packing a fun single shot mode, the entire S20 range is ready for social media, capturing a range of photos and videos simultaneously so you can take a picture and then decide later. They are also all ready for 8K, filming the highest resolution sequence on the block.
Why is the S20 Ultra not higher on our list? Its night mode can't subvert the best, and Samsung's treatment is aggressive; so the photos may seem too punchy. That said, it's still a stellar camera phone with an excellent zoom.

OnePlus has stepped up its game when it comes to smartphone cameras, bringing the new OnePlus 8 Pro closer than ever to the best thanks to the fact that it is powered by Sony's new 12-bit IMX689 sensor. With a large size of 1 / 1.4 “and pixels of 1.12 micron, the main camera of the OnePlus 8 Pro can capture breathtaking bokeh and clear photos by day, even in average light.
It's not just the sensor that's specified on the main snapper of the new OnePlus – thanks to phase detection autofocus and laser autofocus, not to mention OIS, it locks quickly and keeps things stable through photography and video.
Unlike periscope zoom cameras, the OnePlus 8 Pro cannot compete when it comes to getting closer and closer to distant subjects. That said, its 8MP, f / 2.4 telephoto camera contains 3x optical zoom and OIS, which improves the maximum focal length of the iPhone 11 Pro.
The real boon when it comes to OnePlus 8 Pro improvements has to be this 48 MP ultra-wide camera, GoPro-esque. With a huge number of pixels for an ultra-wide, an open f / 2.2 aperture to let in a lot of light and a viewing angle of 14 mm (116 °), it gets a lot of frame and captures more resolution than almost everything another ultra-wide camera around.
Finally, the 12 MP color filter camera from OnePlus. This bizarre addition captures a twisted view of reality, giving standard colors a neon, almost metallic screen-printed finish.

On many levels, we are bigger fans of the S20 Plus than the Ultra. It costs less and offers a much more manageable footprint. Even if they don't have a “100x spatial zoom” or a 108 MP main camera, they still take better shots than last year's S10 family.
The 64MP telephoto lens may seem tantalizing – all that resolution combined with all that zoom. But, the “3x zoom” of these phones is not all. The S20's 64MP sensor combines with a focal length of 29 mm – just 3 mm longer than that of the main camera by 26 mm. However, the way it achieves a 3x zoom is to crop the sensor to get a 3x hybrid zoom. In turn, the phones cannot stack on the periscope cameras during the test.
As for the ultra-wide cameras on both phones, they clock at 12 MP, with an f / 2.2 aperture and a focal length of 13 mm. If you opted for the S20 Plus, you will also have a time-of-flight sensor on the back to enter depth information. This helps to blur the background in Live Focus mode, although both phones offer respectable portrait-style shots.
As with the S20 Ultra, the S20 and S20 Plus shoot 8K video at 24 frames per second and 4K video up to 60 frames per second. They also capture HDR videos, a relatively unique feature among today's smartphones.

Unlike the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 vanilla misses a telephoto camera, Asus ROG Phone 2– wide style + ultra-large double snapper around the back.
Nevertheless, we are delighted to see the new long exposure night mode trigger when shooting in low light on this model at a lower cost.
This means that the iPhone 11 can see in the dark, even when you are holding the phone in your hand, and the photo quality of its primary and ultra-wide cameras is fantastic. Another area in which all of the iPhones on our list excel is video capture; they all record videos in 4K resolution up to 60 fps and do so on all of their lenses.
With smooth transitions between lenses and iMovie on board for basic editing, if we were to buy a smartphone for easy-to-use, high-quality film making, it would be one of the iPhones on our list.

The Huawei P30 Pro must be quite special, given that it remains on the list despite being launched in early 2019.
Its excellence comes down to its “ periscope ” telephoto lens which takes superb optically zoomed photos from a distance, and its fantastic performance in low light, which in fact surpasses the iPhone 11 Pro and Google Pixel 4s in automatic mode, but not always fashion night.
There were a lot of cameras to test on this phone, including four on the back: a 40MP main lens, an 8MP telephoto lens, an ultra wide 20MP lens, then a ToF (time-of-flight) camera to detect depth for portraits.
The Huawei P30 Pro camera also uses a RYYB sensor (red yellow yellow blue) instead of the standard RGB sensor (red green blue) to capture more light, and it shows. The shots we took for our review had more detail and less shade than most competitors, but they didn't look completely overexposed.
All of this is amazing for a smartphone, but not entirely perfect. We noticed purple fringes in the areas, and the camera software controls aren't always responsive when switching between ultra-wide, 5x zoom, 10x zoom, and 50x digital zoom. But the fact that you can get incredibly close to objects with a 50x zoom and take night shots as if all the lights are on really sets a new bar for camera phones.

Xiaomi broke the mold with its penta Mi Note 10 camera. The phone's 108MP sensor, made by Samsung, is a world first, breaking resolution records and packing more pixels than practically any DSLR or digital camera. mirror – not to mention any smartphone.
As with all 48MP cameras introduced in 2019, the Mi Note 10 uses quad pixel technology, or “pixel binning” to capture standard photos. This technique combines four pixels into one, so a 48MP sensor would create a 12MP image, and the 108MP sensor on the Mi Note 10 produces a 27MP image. The reason for this combination is to capture a wider dynamic range and better performance in low light by using information from multiple pixels to create a super pixel. If the light is good, however, you can increase the resolution and capture 108 MP full images for incredibly detailed shots – nothing else comes close to the Mi Note 10 in this regard.
The main camera absolutely nails it and, in good lighting, beats the competition in many ways, but the reason why this megapixel monster is not higher on our list is that the additional cameras may be inconsistent. Although we like the fact that it has a 2x optical zoom, a 5x zoom and an ultra wide angle, as well as a dedicated macro camera, if quality is your goal, take most of the time with the main 108MP module .

Samsung's dual aperture smart main camera has been introduced on the The Samsung Galaxy S9 is back, switching between f / 1.5 and f / 2.4 without breaking a sweat. This time, on the Note 10 Plus, it is combined with an ultra-wide 12mm camera that allows you to take wider pictures than virtually any other camera phone.
It's not the only addition to the Note 10 Plus – this time there's a time-of-flight sensor, like on the Huawei P30 Pro, and it captures depth information for better focus and bokeh back -plan when shooting in Live Focus (portrait).
Samsung's camera user interface is also incredibly complete, with a pro mode that can keep the shutter open for more than 30 seconds, as well as an improved night mode, which attempts to defeat Huawei and Google.
Unfortunately, this is where he drops the ball by comparison, but despite some good night shots that are not sensational, the Note 10 is still a very good camera, and its smart S Pen can even act as a remote shutter release. for the moments when you support your Note on a surface and take remote group photos.
