When (spoiler warning!) the crew of the USS Discovery twisted in the distant future in the season 2 finale, Captain Christopher Pike, science officer Spock and first number one officer stayed in the 23rd century.
The trio was so successful with fans, however, that they got their own show, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a new series on the USS Enterprise a decade before James T Kirk took control.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release date: what do we know?
The USS Enterprise has faced many enemies in its distinguished life, but few have been as problematic as the coronavirus. With lockdown restrictions stopping much of Hollywood, executive producer Akiva Goldsman admitted to Variety that he had “no idea” when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds went into production. And since the shows are as rich in visual effects as the Treks tend to require long post-production, we'd be surprised if we see Strange New Worlds before the second half of 2021 – and that's optimistic.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Story: What We Know About This Part of Trek's History
Pike, Spock and Number One are part of the history of Star Trek even longer than James T Kirk – they were aboard the Enterprise in the original Star Trek pilot “The Cage”, not released in the 60s and put more than a decade before Kirk's. famous five-year mission. This suggests that while Strange New Worlds will feature a global narrative arc, the show will revert to the story structure of the week that defined the original series and much of the next generation era – a dramatic change compared to the seriously Discovery and Picard series. Indeed, the possibility of visiting a huge galaxy of, well, strange new worlds, should allow the show to feel different from week to week – a versatile formula which is a big reason for the longevity of the franchise.
Continuing Mount's performance in Discovery, Pike is the perfect captain for an optimistic exploration mission. We can also expect to see a more emotionally charged Spock than its counterpart in the original series – in “The Cage”, number one was the most buttoned up and logical member of the crew, with her personality traits passed on to the Vulcan when Star Trek went serial. And maybe we can finally find out if number one has a last name – Discovery has confirmed that his first name is Una, but that's all we know.
At this point in the Star Trek timeline, Kirk and the other members of the original crew must be out there somewhere in the universe, so the smart money would be on a few guest appearances (redesign) – Like the older members of the In the original series, McCoy and Scotty would appear to be prime candidates. We would also be very surprised if James Frain did not resume his role of discovery as Spock's father, Sarek.
And then there is the tragic story of Pike…
When we meet him in the two-part menagerie of the original series, he revealed that he had been severely handicapped by a radiation leak. In Discovery, he is forced to support a vision of this future. It will be interesting to see how this knowledge feeds on his mind and how much it plays in the drama of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
