PureVPN is a renowned, low-cost VPN service with over 2000 servers suitable for torrenting, streaming, and powerful security. For the price of 2.91 / month and a 4.5-star rating, PureVPN manages to offer the best investment for your money.
PureVPN is among the most famous VPNs in the industry. The company is headquartered in Hong Kong, which is known for being free. of data retention laws.
Additionally, PureVPN offers More than 2000 servers which are perfect for torrenting download, Netflix streaming and for a lot of other things.
As for compatibility, they support all major platforms like Windows, Android, Mac, Linux, and some other popular platforms.
PureVPN offerings with features strong encryption, Kill switch, Divided tunneland flexibility to Simultaneously protect up to 10 devices at the same time with just 1 PureVPN account for a lower price of $ 2.91 / month.
But there were few failures That is why I went back to visit PureVPN again, subjected it to extensive tests and, as it has been solved a lot, I gave it a 4.5 star rating in this PureVPN review.
I rated PureVPN on my 9-step rating criteria listed below:
- Jurisdiction – Where is PureVPN based?
- Security – Is PureVPN safe?
- Leaks – Is IP, DNS and WebRTC filtered?
- Servers Does it support P2P or does it work in China?
- Speed – How fast is PureVPN?
- Transmission – Does it work with Netflix and other VoD services?
- Compatibility – Compatible apps and devices
- Prices – How much exactly does PureVPN cost?
- Integrity – Trustpilot, Reddit and customer service ratings
Jurisdiction – Where is PureVPN based?
PureVPN is based on the free data retention jurisdiction of Hong Kong. To be real with you, jurisdiction is the number one factor to consider in any VPN service. I say this because VPN registries and jurisdictions are codependent (We will discuss this in the registration policy section of this review.)
For example, if PureVPN was based in the UK (An integral part of the five eyes.), they would have had to comply with the UK Power Investigation Act, also known as Snoopers Charter.
Anyway, from Hong Kong it is a surveillance free jurisdiction, are You are not obligated to store any record of any kind.
Security: is PureVPN secure?
PureVPN is considered one of the safest VPNs, and there is a reason for it. Offers Powerful 256-bit encryption and optimized protocols like OpenVPN, L2TP / IPsec, SSTP, PPTP and even IKEv2.
Each of these protocols is different in terms of functionality and is perfect for gaming, streaming, secure online browsing and offers the first line of defense against online threats like session hacking or Man in the middle (MITM) attacks.
Additional security features
In addition to the traditional security features that most VPN applications offer, PureVPN offers some additional benefits that I personally have not seen with other VPN providers.
Let’s start with Kill Switch …
PureVPN Kill Switch
Although PureVPN’s Kill switching feature has been heavily criticized in the past, however, now it has been fixed.
The last time I checked PureVPN, kill switch function really failed twice. With that said, I ran the test again for the PureVPN review, and the feature worked correctly.
To test the Kill switch function, I just clicked disconnect button on your desktop application. As soon as I did that, my Wi-Fi connection was automatically disconnected. Props to make it work as it should.
PureVPN registration policy
“We DO NOT keep any records of your browsing activities, connection records, records of the VPN IPs assigned to you, your original IPs, your connection time, your browsing history, the sites you visited, your outgoing traffic, the content or data you accessed, or DNS queries generated by you. “
Not only that, but PureVPN has also recently conducted an independent audit of its “no records” policy by Altius IT. The famous auditing firm could not find any evidence that could be used to identify a specific person on the PureVPN network.
If you don’t know what data logging means, I’ve covered it in great detail in my comprehensive research policy on logging policies.
Although PureVPN no longer keeps any records, if we go back a few years ago, PureVPN was involved in serious controversy regarding data recording. Obviously, I’m talking about the infamous data logging case that helped catch a cyber stalker.
Even though PureVPN claimed to be an unregistered VPN service, it still disclosed the information of the alleged harassers to the FBI.
Depending on the seriousness of the matter, the PureVPN CEO had to introduce himself and officially release a statement regarding data registration complaints.
The only thing they register
Impressive split tunnel function
In addition to a Kill switch, PureVPN also offers a feature called Split Tunneling. If you don’t know what this feature does, it’s basically a two-way tunnel for your encrypted and unencrypted traffic.
For example, you just want to encrypt your torrent traffic without encrypting your usual browsing traffic.
It makes perfect sense, I mean why would you want to load your Facebook with superior encryption.
The split tunnel function had some flaws in the past, however that was fixed now too. I tried it with torrents and It worked perfectly as advertised.
Dedicated PureVPN IP Address
Unlike other VPNs, PureVPN offers dedicated IPs. This feature is perfect if you don’t want to deal with account suspensions, IP fluctuations, or Netflix proxy errors.
That said, PureVPN’s dedicated IPs cost more than your current subscription plan. But considering that you wouldn’t have to share your dedicated IP with other PureVPN users, paying an additional $ 0.99 / month can come in handy.
PureVPN port forwarding
Another additional feature that PureVPN offers is port forwarding. Similar to dedicated IP, PureVPN’s port forwarding feature costs more and starts from $ 0.99 / mo.
If you don’t know what it is, it’s basically a network technology that allows external devices to access computer services on private networks. It is especially popular for secure gaming, torrents, and remote access to computing resources such as printers.
Unlike Nat Firewall which can restrict VPN essentials like torrenting, PureVPN Nat Firewall or port forwarding gives VPN users the freedom to specify ports for incoming connections.
Leaks: are IP, DNS and WebRTC leaking?
PureVPN is among the few VPNs that don’t leak your IP, DNS, or WebRTC. I ran the leak test for PureVPN on multiple servers using ipleak.org and experienced no leakage at all.
Take a look at the screenshots below:
Servers: is it P2P compatible or does it work in China?
As I mentioned earlier, PureVPN has impressive server coverage made up of more than 2000 servers in more than 180 locations worldwide.
While many VPN providers only target their server locations in Europe and North America, PureVPN offers a global mix of server locations that extend to Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, and even Myanmar.
These servers work perfectly in China and can handle torrents, streams, and even online games. You can check the list of PureVPN servers here.
Is PureVPN good for Torrenting?
P2P file sharing and torrents work very well with PureVPN. I managed to get decent download speeds without facing network interruptions.
But be aware that PureVPN torrenting is prohibited in the United Kingdom (United Kingdom), United States (USA), Canada, Australia and in other countries where torrenting is illegal by law.
Although this may be disappointing for some users, it’s good to see that PureVPN at least supports torrents in the first place. I say this because most VPN companies just don’t want to deal with copyright infringement cases associated with torrents.
Does PureVPN work in China?
Yes, PureVPN works surprisingly well in China. It offers 12 special obfuscated servers in China. You can use PureVPN China servers in Shanghai and Beijing. That said, since many VPNs are blocked in China, you may not be able to access the PureVPN website or download its app from the Google Playstore.
If you encounter any problems downloading PureVPN while you are in China, I suggest you check out our detailed guide for China only. I have covered some very useful troubleshooting steps specifically for China that should fix any potential issues you may face.
Speed: How fast is PureVPN?
PureVPN managed to offer exceptional download and upload speeds during my tests. I mean, the results blew my mind. With my 15 Mbps office internet connection, I managed to squeeze download speeds of over 14 Mbps.
For your convenience, I have compiled PureVPN pings, downloads, and upload speeds in the table below.
|Server location||Ping (MS)||Download (Mbps)||Upload (Mbps)|
|United States Miami FL||266||9.92||6.40|
|United Kingdom, London||148||14.80||9.76|
Overall, PureVPN managed to deliver excellent speeds for Netflix streaming, torrenting, and overall fast browsing.
Streaming – Does it work with Netflix and other VoD services?
Yes, as I mentioned earlier, Netflix works very well with PureVPN. In fact, PureVPN can unlock a total of 7 Netflix regions. You can now stream content from the US USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France and even Japan.
If we talk about the streaming experience, PureVPN offered excellent speeds and I didn’t notice any lag or pixelated video quality.
That being said, you can find Netflix proxy error at least once or twice in the Netflix American Library.
But after switching to a different server from the US. You should be able to successfully unlock the American Netflix library.
If it doesn’t work for you, try changing servers or get a new IP that works for Netflix by contacting the PureVPN support equipment.
In addition to Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Hulu also worked flawlessly. In fact, at the time of writing this PureVPN review, both services were playing in HD quality with no annoying delays or proxy errors.
Compatibility: compatible apps and devices
The compatibility of the PureVPN device is excellent. Combine with the fact that you can use PureVPN on 10 devices simultaneously at the same time, making it a pretty versatile VPN service.
Here is a complete list of devices compatible with PureVPN:
- Android TV
- Amazon Firestick
- Microsoft Surface
- Boxee box
- Now TV Box
- Raspberry Pi
- Cast chrome
- Play station
- IOS app (relaunched)
PureVPN for Firestick
PureVPN is fully compatible with Firestick. In fact, PureVPN offers a standalone app fully optimized for Firestick & Fire TV that can be easily downloaded. In fact, PureVPN is one of the best VPNs for Fire TV.
It is no surprise that online privacy is reduced day by day. No matter what we do online, we are always being monitored. Even streaming programs from the comfort of your room is no longer hidden from the eyes of potential digital marketers and copyright narcs looking to make money off of you.
Although Firestick is an amazing device with endless streaming capabilities, excessive monitoring by your ISP can take all the fun out of it. That’s unless you use a combination of PureVPN Firestick to really anonymize your online activities.
With PureVPN running silently in the background, not only will you be able to unblock geo-blocked streaming services, but you’ll also stay totally secure.
PureVPN for iOS
If we go back a couple of months, the PureVPN iOS app was removed from the App Store, as it didn’t meet the parameters set by Apple.
With that said, the app is back online and compatible with the latest iOS versions. I tried the new app to check its performance and I can safely say that the new version is a noticeable improvement with easy to use interface and it works smoothly. In fact, the PureVPN iOS app have a 3.7 star rating.
PureVPN for Android
Similar to the PureVPN iOS app, the PureVPN Android app also works flawlessly. I really enjoyed the user experience on my Android device.
The app is considerably light and the lack of messy options makes using the app very easy.
PureVPN for Windows
Your Windows application is really horrible. You cannot connect to any server at once. You should try again several times just to connect to a specific server. A also experienced the error message that said “PureVPN cannot connect to the remote server.”
In addition to that, the application is also very slow to use. Typing at a server location is terribly delayed and the app also stops responding for no apparent reason from time to time.
PureVPN’s Windows app also tends to disconnect my Wi-Fi for no reason. Even when it works well, it takes too long to connect to a specific server. Overall, your Windows app is a total nightmare to use.
Since I was experiencing connection problems I Googled the problem “PureVPN not connecting” and found a quick solution that worked for me. All I did was disable my firewall and antivirus app and that solved the connection problem.
PureVPN for Linux
Although PureVPN might suck on the Windows platform, using it on a Linux-based machine isn’t that bad.
It is now recognized that there is no standalone PureVPN application that is compatible with Linux, however, with a little configuration, you can run PureVPN on your Linux machine.
Setting up non-GUI based applications on Linux can usually be quite challenging, however PureVPN has done a pretty good job of simplifying the setup process.
PureVPN for Mac
PureVPN’s Mac app is nothing like its Windows counterpart. Rather than being excruciatingly insensitive, the Mac app is an absolute joy to use.
With the same selection option intuitively, everything is simplified and facilitates the use of the application. The interface is very elegant and looks quite modern and minimalist.
If you’re having trouble with these apps, here are some solutions to apply when you find that PureVPN doesn’t work.
How much does PureVPN cost exactly?
PureVPN offers three (3) subscription plans at very reasonable prices. Since the PureVPN lifetime deal is no longer offered, here are PureVPN’s updated pricing plans:
Your 2-year plan is not only reasonably priced, but also comes with a 73% discount, making it one of the cheapest VPNs in the industry.
In addition to standard subscription plans, PureVPN charges additional fees for Dedicated IP and port forwarding. Here’s what these two additional services will cost you:
Forwarding of ports:
1 month – $ 1.99 / month
1 year – $ 0.99 / month
2 years – $ 0.99 / month
As for the payment options, you can buy PureVPN through credit cards, PayPal, Crypto and many other payment methods.
Please note that coin payments are non-refundable. That’s something to keep in mind if you don’t end up satisfied with their service. That said, if you want to play securely and don’t want to commit to a lengthy subscription plan, you can try the 3-day paid VPN trial.
Reliability – Trustpilot, Reddit ratings and customer support
So is PureVPN good? Well, considering all its features, its ability to unblock Netflix, real servers in China and affordable prices with the dedicated Kodi VPN plugin, PureVPN is definitely worth it.
That said, while there is a lot to praise about this VPN, there are still some annoying issues that need to be fixed.
To be honest, the last time I wrote in the PureVPN review, I found their service to be absolutely terrible. However, they certainly have come a long way since then in 2020.
If you compare the PureVPN alternatives, let’s say PureVPN vs. IPVanish, PureVPN is not only much more secure, much cheaper, but also offers many more servers. Not to mention PureVPN’s privacy features that are on par with other industry leaders.
