There is no doubt that COVID-19 has accelerated the remote working revolution. And on this fast track, the use of VPN has reached new heights without any sign of slowing down. Companies had no choice but to close shop and send workers home, and had to understand just as quickly How? ‘Or' What to secure this workforce.

But what is the size of the peak? In a recent study by VPNOnlineFree, 30% of employees surveyed say their company recently implemented remote work capabilities for the first time. 61% already had remote working rules.

The accelerated need for virtualization also meant a massive increase in the use of VPNs – but not just any VPN. Corporate VPNs are booming, according to the study.68% of employees say their company has expanded the use of VPN as a direct result of COVID-19, and 29% say their organization has started using a VPN for the first time.

But remote working is not completely new – in fact, it has been increasing for some time. Consider these statistics:

From 2005 to 2017, there were 159% jump into remote work. In 2015: 3.9 million American workers were already away. Today? Over 5 million. And there is no sign of the wave slowing down, now or never – especially in today's climate.

The VPNOnlineFree study of May 2020 surveyed workers from 300 different companies in sectors such as technology, energy, education, healthcare, engineering and construction, and explored how companies manage the new era at a distance, during COVID-19.

The study explored how organizations manage the new era remotely from COVID-19 – and how they secure their teams. The study seeks to answer the question: “Is remote working really the future? “If the numbers are an indication, the answer is a resounding YES.

VPNs FOR BUSINESS ARE ESSENTIAL

Businesses recognize that a layered approach is still the best approach to tackle cyber attacks – and a necessary part of that approach is to invest in a reputable professional VPN. Even if every cell phone and laptop is equipped with a personal VPN in the future, businesses will still need a secure way for workers to access a private network, and they will need a VPN for company to do it. A personal VPN gives you private and secure access to the Internet, which is valuable in itself – but a corporate VPN gives you the ability to remotely access resources on the private network, often essential to complete the job, and securely connect your company's branches and locations around the world.

Nearly 70% of employees surveyed say their company has expanded the use of the professional VPN and 29% say their organization has started using it for the first time. It's a big boom, mainly due to COVID-19 … but is it here to stay?

Surprisingly, not all companies are on board.

Of the 21% of employees surveyed whose companies have never used a VPN, 71% added that their companies still neglect to use this essential security tool, despite the shift to remote work. This suggests that many companies again do not have a network security plan in place for remote work, despite the current crisis.
