With the growing popularity of streaming services, dedicated devices have emerged to meet consumer demand for digital content. At the top of the game is the Nvidia Shield, a platform that offers 4K streaming capabilities for movies, TV shows and games!

However, it is not enough to have a shield. Using a virtual private network (VPN), you can unblock regional content online, while helping you stay safe and private at the same time. In this article, we are comparing the top 5 VPNs for Nvidia Shield and how to get the most out of your streaming device.

Why do I need a VPN for Nvidia Shield?

VPNs are a great way to secure your privacy online, because they encrypt your traffic and help protect you from cyber attacks. VPNs also offer the ability to present different geolocation on websites and online services – allowing you to unlock regional content and even get cheaper games by buying them abroad.

Using a VPN with your shield is a great way to unblock Netflix content only available in America, Britain, or even Japan (a VPN will unblock content from other streaming services). However, not all VPNs will unblock regional content and some will do it better than others. If you want to get the most out of streaming on your Nvidia Shield, a premium VPN is the best way to unblock content.

Playing on Shield without VPN also leaves you open to DDoS attacks – where someone spams your IP address with requests and causes a delay and / or disconnection. If you want to play competitive game modes on your shield, using a VPN can protect you from more malicious opponents.

On the other hand, if you find yourself banned from a game, a VPN can help you get back. When a player is banned, the IP address associated with their account is also often banned. Using a VPN masks your IP address and allows you to bypass these restrictions.

Can I get a free VPN?

Free VPN services are available, but we don't recommend using them with the Nvidia Shield. This is mainly due to the speed and data limits imposed by the provider. In addition, the free services do not regularly comply with their privacy practices and policies. In fact, some free VPN software has reportedly installed malware on users' devices, and many have been known to disclose and / or sell user information (such as usage, connection, and IP addresses). Free service may not cost you money, but it can cost you your privacy.

How to configure a VPN on my Nvidia Shield?

There are three main methods you can use to set up a VPN on your Shield.

Use the Google Play Store

Nvidia's shield works on Android TV, a variant of Google's Android operating system specially designed for smart TVs and multimedia devices. It has its own version of Google Play Store, which you will notice is much more limited than its smartphone counterpart. Indeed, each application presented here has been adapted to adapt to the resolution and image format of modern television devices.

Fortunately, many traditional VPN providers (and the ones we recommend on this list) have made their apps available directly from the Store. It's the simplest and easiest way to get your hands on a VPN and keep it up to date.

To install a VPN from Google Play Store on your Nvidia Shield, you just need to:

  1. Go to the Play Store.
  2. Find the desired VPN.
  3. Click on Install.
  4. After seeing the VPN shortcut appear on your main menu, click on it and connect.
  5. Remember to check your settings to make sure everything is in order.
  6. Choose a location and connect to a server.
  7. Start the streaming service you want and add content to the content of your heart.

Sideload a VPN

Not all VPNs work with the Nvidia shield because many providers have not made their apps compatible with Android TV. If the provider you have chosen does not create an Android TV app but has a mobile Android app, you can still install it through a process called “side loading”.

Side loading is when you exit official stores to load an otherwise compatible application on your device. Simply put, think of it as loading it to the side. Of course, without being optimized for Android TV, the interface will be identical to that seen on smartphones and can be difficult to navigate with the Nvidia Shield remote control.

We recommend that you stick to our recommendations from the Google Play Store for convenience, but if you are determined on your decision to set aside, there are two methods you can use:

Sideload with a USB stick

  1. Subscribe to the VPN provider of your choice (remember they must have an Android app for this method to work).
  2. On a PC / laptop, go to the supplier's website and download the APK of the application on a USB key (an Android package file required to install the application). Remember to safely eject your USB stick!
  3. On your Nvidia Shield, go to the Settings menu and select Security and restrictions.
  4. Activate Unknown sources and click OK. This will allow you to install apps outside of Google Play.

Remember, although this option gives you the freedom to install what you want, you must be responsible for your choices because some things are malicious.

  5. Return to Google Play Store and download and install ES file explorer file manager (you will have to accept the terms and conditions).
  6. Insert your USB stick in the Nvidia shield.
  7. Open the USB stick using ES File Explorer and click OK to open the program (you choose if you want to check the box to use the default application).
  8. In the left sidebar, select Local then your USB key in the drop-down list.
  9. Install the APK file by selecting it and clicking install (you will have to click install again to accept the necessary permissions).
  10. After installing the VPN, click on Open and your VPN app will launch. From there you can log into your account and adjust your settings and location.
  11. After connecting to the desired server, leave the application running in the background and start broadcasting!

Sideload with mouse and keyboard

  1. Subscribe to the VPN provider of your choice (remember they must have an Android app for this method to work).
  2. Connect your mouse and keyboard to the Nvidia shield. Use them to navigate, as some apps do not work well with the supplied remote control or controller.
  3. Go to Settings menu on your Nvidia Shield and select Security and restrictions.
  4. To toggle Unknown sources ON and click OK. This allows you to install apps outside of the Google Play Store.

However, try to be careful what you download, as many applications are malicious.

  5. Go to Google Play Store and download and install ES file explorer file manager (you will have to accept the terms and conditions).
  6. Open ES file explorer.
  7. Open the Prefer drop down menu and click Add.
  8. Beside Path, add a link to your favorite browser. We prefer https://duckduckgo.com/ because it preserves your privacy, but you can add https://google.com if you want. Whichever you choose, be sure to give it a recognizable name.
  9. Return to Prefer drop down menu and click on your new search engine.
  10. Search and download the APK of your VPN.

Make sure you get it from a reliable source like the provider itself or APKPure.

  11. Once it has downloaded, you will be prompted with two options. Click on Open file so what Install.
  12. If you come across a pop message that says “For your safety, your phone is not allowed to install unknown applications from this source,” just click Settings and flip the switch next to ES File Explorer. file explorer
  13. Now that the APK is downloaded to your machine, you can access Prefer > Download, find the APKand double click on it to Install the application fully.
  14. If you return to the home screen, your VPN app should now appear in your apps. Just start and connect to a server to start the broadcast.

Please note that these apps are not optimized for Android TV and are best used with a mouse and keyboard.

Optionally, you can use the same process to add a browser to your list of applications on your Nvidia Shield. Just find the APK of your favorite browser and download it from a trusted source, like APKPure.

What if my VPN provider does not have an Android app?

If your provider does not have an Android / Android TV compatible application, you will need to configure your VPN manually using VPNOnlineFree for Android:

  1. From your supplier’s website, Download VPNOnlineFree (.conf / .ovpn) and certificate (.crt) configuration files corresponding to the desired server locations on a USB key.
  2. Transfer configuration and certificate files on your Shield. Just like in the last method, you will need to download and install ES file explorer from the Google Play Store to do this.
  3. Download and install VPNOnlineFree for Android on your shield. This can be found in the Google Play Store.
  4. In the VPNOnlineFree app for Android, click on the Import button at the top of the page.
  5. Locate and select the desired VPNOnlineFree configuration file to import it. If you are presented with a certification error, click on it for the moment.
  6. Move towards Profiles in VPNOnlineFree for Android and you should see the profile you just imported. Edit configuration by clicking on the pencil icon.
  7. Click on To select and import the .crt certificate file for the appropriate configuration / profile. Remember to enter your VPN connection information – this will save you from being prompted to re-enter it each time you connect (repeat steps 4 through 7 to add multiple server locations / profiles).
  8. Back to profiles and to choose the one you want to connect to. Make sure to leave the app running in the background and start streaming.

Troubleshooting

Having trouble with your VPN? Try these quick steps to fix minor issues:

  • Restart your shield
  • Update or download your VPN again
  • Select another VPN server
  • Check for problems with your VPN account

If the problems persist, it is best to contact your VPN service provider.
