    $12.99

CyberGhost is a low-cost VPN that doesn't sacrifice privacy or speed. Its non-journaling policy means that only minimal aggregated metadata is saved for anonymous trend analysis. As a VPN for Discord, it offers fast speeds and good unblocking capabilities to help you bypass restrictive networks and censorship. Its “smart rules” functions encompass a set of features that give you greater customization as to how, when and where you connect to your VPN.

Although CyberGhost has no obfuscation available, it still provides a completely secure service, and stealth and privacy are increased by switching from UDP to TCP on port 443. This will mask your use by making it appear as https : // traffic, but may still have problems with the big firewall in China. Overall, CyberGhost is a great move for the VPN buck which has excellent customization and unblocking capability for VoIP technologies.

Why do I need a VPN for Discord?

Without VPN, Discord is blocked on many professional and school networks and is completely prohibited in some countries. Using a VPN with Discord is a great way to get around network restrictions. If Discord and other VoIP technologies are prohibited where you are, then using the right VPN can help you access them, without the risk of detection. With appropriate obfuscation (stealth) technologies and strong encryption, a VPN can hide your use of detection by making it look like regular and legitimate traffic.

On top of that, using a VPN can unlock other regional content like Netflix, Hulu and iPlayer, and even help you buy products cheaply by ordering them overseas. VPNs can also prevent Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from monitoring your usage. This is ideal if you want to prevent bandwidth limitation or if you do not want your usage data to be sold to third parties. If you want to get the most out of your internet usage without sacrificing your privacy, using a VPN is the best way to do it.

Note: A VPN can slow your overall speed (as it adds an extra layer in the process), but it will often be a very small amount, unless your VPN imposes a speed limit.

UDP and TCP

Most VPN providers will run the VPNOnlineFree protocol (encryption) via the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or the User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

TCP is more reliable, but UDP is faster

TCP is more commonly used to download files because it offers error correction. When a computer sends network packets using TCP, it waits for confirmation that the packet has been received and returns it if it is not. This ensures that all packets are received and in the correct order.

UDP, however, does not offers error correction and continues to send packets without confirmation. For this reason, UDP is preferred for streaming, games and live broadcasts, since packet loss is less damaging in these cases.

To summarize, TCP is more reliable, But UDP is faster. Discord uses UDP to send communications, so it's important to choose a VPN provider that supports UDP.

Our The TCP vs UDP guide covers this in more depth if you want to know more.

How to unblock Discord with a VPN

If Discord is blocked at your school, work or home, follow these three simple steps to unblock Discord with your VPN:

  1. After subscribing to the provider of your choice, Download their VPN app.
  2. Log into the app and connect to a server. Ideally one that is nearby (or one in a country that allows Discord if yours does not allow it).
  3. Start using Discord!

If you find that Discord is running slowly, try using a different server. We also recommend that you use a VPN with a kill switch option for added security if you want to access Discord in a country where it is restricted. This will protect you from detection by disconnecting from the Internet if your VPN disconnects.

Can I get a free VPN?

A free VPN can be a good way to save money, but if you're trying to get around censorship and legislative restrictions, it can do more harm than good. Here is a quick list of reasons why free VPNs are not recommended to unblock access to Discord:

  • Not all free VPNs are compatible with UDP (so Discord won't work with them at all).
  • Most free VPNs have data and speed restrictions that can slow or even stop Discord from working. This will cause pixelation of streams and chats, distorted sound and even failure.
  • The free services use a small number of servers which are often known and limited by censored networks / authorities. They are also regularly congested due to the high traffic.
  • Many free VPN services lack strong encryption and obfuscation options for users, which means they are more vulnerable to government interception and less capable of geo-spoofing. No free VPN (we know of) is capable of breaking through the big firewall in China, so that in itself is a big problem for Chinese users looking to access Discord or foreign web pages.
  • Many free VPN services monitor and sell user data and information (this information can be passed on to the authorities, which is a huge problem if your government has completely banned Discord).
  • Some free VPN services are known to infect devices with malware.

VPN does not work with Discord?

If you are still unable to connect to Discord with your VPN, there are two likely causes.

IP bans

First, it is possible that this particular IP address was prohibited by Discord. This is much more common with free VPNs, as trolls will use them to target servers, be banned, change to a new IP address and continue. In this case, try to change your server and see if something changes. If not, there may be another reason.

No UDP support

Your VPN provider may also not support UDP. While most providers allow users to choose with VPNOnlineFree, some do not. First try to check if you can switch from TCP to UDP, and if that doesn't work, it's likely your provider doesn't support UDP. In this case, you may need to change providers.

If you're still having trouble, it's best to contact your supplier's customer service and see if they have a solution.
